{"id":1261,"date":"2011-06-01T07:01:09","date_gmt":"2011-06-01T14:01:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.digittante.com\/wp\/2011\/06\/01\/reading-for-june-1-2011\/"},"modified":"2011-06-01T07:01:09","modified_gmt":"2011-06-01T14:01:09","slug":"reading-for-june-1-2011","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.digittante.com\/wp\/2011\/06\/01\/reading-for-june-1-2011\/","title":{"rendered":"READING for  June 1, 2011"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul class=\"scrd_digest\">\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/feeds.wired.com\/~r\/wired\/science\/~3\/Igv-H0cK1vU\/\" rel=\"external\">Final Trip: Shuttle Endeavour Docked at Space Station<\/a>\n<div>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-62056\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wired.com\/wiredscience\/2011\/05\/endeavour-night\/endeavour-over-earth\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Endeavour over Earth\" src=\"http:\/\/www.wired.com\/images_blogs\/wiredscience\/2011\/05\/Endeavour-over-Earth.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"495\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Astronauts aboard the International Space Station captured stunning photos of the Space Shuttle <em>Endeavour<\/em> over a light-streaked planet, just before the shuttle returns to Earth for the last time.<\/p>\n<p><em>Endeavour<\/em> took off on its <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/mission_pages\/shuttle\/shuttlemissions\/sts134\/index.html\">final mission<\/a> May 16, carrying a <a href=\"http:\/\/ams.nasa.gov\/\">dark matter-hunting instrument<\/a> and a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wired.com\/wiredscience\/2011\/05\/squid-microbes-endeavour\/\">bobtail squid<\/a>, among other supplies. The photo above was taken May 28, the day before <em>Endeavour<\/em> detached from the space station, and the six-person crew began the trip home.<\/p>\n<p>The photo captures the sheer speed of the space station and docked shuttle, which orbit Earth once every 90 minutes. City lights streak by hundreds of miles below, lending a sense of motion and urgency to the otherwise still scene.<\/p>\n<p>The photo below shows <em>Endeavour<\/em>\u2019s wing backlit by a thin ring of twilight at the edge of the Earth.<\/p>\n<p>Endeavour is scheduled to land at Kennedy Space Center at 2:35 am EDT on June 1, so look up tonight.
